Question:

Graduate assistantship interview -- What to wear?

I am interviewing with the Associate Dean of my college for an Ombudsperson position. This is a graduate assistantship that will grant me a tuition waver, should I be lucky enough to get it.

My question is, what should I wear? Business professional (a suit) or business casual (nice skirt and blouse)? Which is more appropriate?

Thanks!

  1. The clear answer is a suit.  You can't go wrong with a suit especially in a university setting.  I do agree that you should splurge on one good suit that you can use for interviewing, if you do not already have one.  However, Express is not the only place to find a suit!  You can find much better quality for the same price, just shop around and find the best fit (tailors are awesome).  Remember, confidence looks better than anything you wear.  Know what the dean is looking for and express to them you are what they need.

  2. Business professional with a skirt! of course! You need to be confident that you are a woman AND an excellent student. I would suggest going to your nearest Express Fashion store, go ahead and splurge on an excellent suit. The cut and style there is amazing and very professional yet feminine. I would choose a black skirt and jacket with a fun print on the inside (only you can see, your dirty little secret!!) with a colorful silk blouse, perhaps a pretty pattern or a soft color. If you're a really eccentric, confident person then a bright color might be for you, but I would stick to being a little more conservative for the occasion with perhaps a light blue or pink.

I wish you the best of luck! And remember to smile!!!

  3. Business professional. (college prof)  You will find your associate dean in a suit!
