Does the reputation of an institute where you obtained your bachelor degree relevant if you're seeking to apply to top graduate school(engineering program)? Will I have a chance to get an admission if I received my bachelor degree from a community college?

  1. A bachelors from a community college? Not many ccs offer bachelors degrees, especially not in engineering.

The academic reputation of your undergraduate program does matter in terms of admission to top grad schools. However, if your GPA is high, and your GRE (and GRE subject test) are well within the normal ranges, or even high, for that grad school, and all of the rest of your application looks good, then you stand a shot. Worth your time to apply, certainly.

However, some grad engineering programs state that your undergraduate engineering degree must be from an ABET accredited program. This is a question you'll want to research on their websites, or ask them directly.

  2. Yes, the institution will matter.  A 4.0 from Stanford means a lot more than a 4.0 from Unknown State.  It's not going to necessarily keep you out, but having a degree from a well-known school would have helped.

You cannot get a bachelors degree from a community college - they only offer associates degrees.  If you're getting a bachelors degree, it's not a community college.  And you need a bachelors degree to apply to a graduate program - an associates is not enough.

  3. You can't get a BA from a community college.

When you get your BA Masters' programs will care more about grades, test scores, experience, extra curricular activity, and community service than the college you got your BA from. That being said, it doesn't hurt to come from a top flight BA/BS program.
