Question:

Graduate school for archaeology?

I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for good grad schools. I want to get my PhD in archaeology. I've a BA right now, and I'd prefer not to do a terminal master's and just go for the doctorate. My primary interest is prehistoric North American archaeology, but that's as specific as I get. I have vague leanings towards education or working with the public, but I might just stay in CRM. I've been looking at UCLA and UC Berkeley and the University of Wyoming. Anyone have any other ideas or any thoughts on those choices? Thanks!

  1. Also check out University at Albany, they have a pretty good Archaeology and Anthropology department, with specializations in North and South America.

  2. When I was choosing my graduate university, I checked out the research that was out there and where it was coming from - what I wanted to study, specifically, and who had common interests. I didn't look at what schools are considered "top tier" or any of those sorts of rankings - I turned to the journals and the research. Find the guys and gals whose work you are interested in and see where they are teaching .. and most importantly - go visit them. Sit down and talk with them about what you plan to do study and do after you receive yoru degree. You want to be somewhere that has excellent opportunities for research, find out where they get their money, etc.

  3. Fer American History: NO IDEA!!!

Fer World History: Dept. of Archeology, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, Haryana; India

  4. Berkeley is about as good as you can get if your goal is to join the hundreds of other PhDs applying for the 5 or so tenure-track academic positions that become available every year.  Pittsburgh,. Either of the major New Mexico Schools, U. Michigan and U Texas@Austin also do fairly well with preparing people for either academia or advancement in CRM.  And, unlike many of the inexplicably top-ranked Anthro Departments (i.e. Chicago, Harvard), you won't destroy your credibility in CRM with a degree from any of these.

  5. look at UA too
