Grady Sizemore leads list of position players in free-agent market – MLB Update
It is common for teams to sign big names when it comes to pitchers and sluggers. However, position players continue to play an important part in the overall success of the team, going un-noticed most of the times.
When the trade market gets rift in the offseason, teams are expected to spend plenty to strengthen their bull-pens, but only the clever general managers will sign quality position players who are equally effective in offence.
Grady Sizemore of Cleveland Indians is now a free-agent and it is highly unlikely that his team will pick up an 8.5-million-dollar option on the player. If the player proves his fitness, he can do wonders for any team that acquires him. However, the Indians
have signalled their intent to rebuild their roster and Sizemore’s experience will be vital in this regard.
“I like Cuddyer, who can play anywhere, and I think NL teams might like his versatility,” Larry Bowa says. “He’s intriguing. Kubel is another guy - he can hit home runs and he could really hit them in Yankee Stadium, with that short porch. This guy has some
power, put him in a park where the ball flies.”
The Yankees have enough offensive strength, but need a serious overhaul in the bull-pen, which failed miserably during the postseason. Nevertheless, the Yankees might sign Jason Kubel in the outfield, given his usefulness in the offence as well as defence.
The St. Louis Cardinals will surely pick up the 7-million-dollar option on their catcher, Yadier Molina, who was central to the World Series win against Texas Rangers. Not all teams have the liberty of having such a talent in their ranks, but this year,
the likes of Ramon Hernandez, Rod Barajas and Pudge Rodriguez are free agents and can be ranked as quality starters for an everyday position.
Jorge Posada will likely move from the New York Yankees after failing to find his position as an everyday player. The Baltimore Orioles have shown a liking for the catcher and he will surely add to the overall offensive power of the team as well.
With a few days left before talks officially begin, it will be interesting to see how things unfold.
