Graeme Lowdon: Virgin Racing Team never used the off-throttle Blown Diffuser since Spanish GP
Sporting director of Virgin Racing Team Graeme Lowdon has said the team has not used the off-throttle Blown Diffuser since the Spanish Grand Prix.
This means that the team has been driving at its true pace since the past two races and now, they are not going to face any loss in terms of pace at the upcoming British Grand Prix.
The officials of the sport announced recently that the use of off-throttle Blown Diffusers will be banned starting from the Silverstone Grand Prix which is scheduled to take place this weekend.
It is believed that most of the teams are expected to lose a lot of pace as a result of this ban but since VRT have not used this device and updated their car accordingly, they are hoping for better comparative pace this coming weekend at Silverstone.
Lowdon claims that the team made a good decision when they decided not to use this device after the announcement was made.
“I think Charlie Whiting is quite right on what he's said on this subject which is it's not a mid-season rule change it's a clarification of a rule that's already there. And the rule for me is really quite clear which is that the primary objective of the exhaust is to get rid of the stuff that you're burning to create torque from the engine, and not as an aerodynamic device,” he said.
Other than that, he stated that the officials should have brought it in this more quickly and that the team decided not to use it due to a number of reasons.
“It would have been nice if the FIA brought in the ban more quickly because it's taken two or three races, but that's just the way it is,” he added.
Nevertheless, the upcoming race is expected to be a real eye opener for most of the teams on the grid especially Red Bull Racing and Lotus Renault GP. Let’s see how much banning of the off-throttle Blown Diffuser affects them.
