Graeme McDowell: Adam Scott is heartbroken after the near win at Lytham
The British Championship Open 2012 finally comes to an end. The venue for this prestigious event was the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Course.
For four days, the best in the world of golf went head to head at this magnificent stage to win the oldest and one of the most prestigious trophy in golf, the Claret Jug.
In the end, there can always be one champion. This tournament had a great end as Ernie Els bagged the Claret Jug, beating Adam Scott by just one stroke. Throughout the tournament Scott exhibited a good consistent game.
The first day was the best round for him. On the day, he carded eight birdies and two bogeys. These made his score six-under par for the day.
The second day was quite decent for him as well. He managed four birdies and a bogey on the day, which made his score nine-under par.
The third day was quite similar to the second one. He had three birdies and one bogey. After the third day, his score was eleven-under par. He was on top of the leaderboard and was well in the lead. At that time, Ernie Els was six strokes behind the Australian.
Unfortunately for Scott, his luck went out on the last day and he had the worst day of the tournament. On the front nine, he had three bogeys and one birdie. He was still in the lead.
On the back nine of the final day, Scott carded a birdie on the fourteenth. This birdie was followed by four consecutive bogeys starting from the fifteenth. These made his score five-over par for the day and his total score six-under par; one stroke behind
Ernie Els.
It was truly a disappointing performance for Scott in the end. He could have easily won the tournament.
Graeme McDowell commented on Scott’s game, he said, “It was tough to say anything to him that was going to be of any relevance. I said he's a great champion and there are many majors ahead for him. It's just a tough beat. He struggled on the greens a little
bit today, as we all did”.
“He's going to be extremely heart-broken and disappointed, but he's a great, great, great player and that's what I tried to convey to him on the last green. Like I say, it felt like a futile exercise trying to say anything to him, but I'm sure he's going
to be unbelievably disappointed,” he added.
