Graeme McDowell and Justin Rose miss the cut at Zurich Classic of New Orleans - Golf News
The world number five Graeme McDowell and world number twenty-five Justin Rose have failed to make the cut in the US$6.4 million-Zurich Classic of New Orleans, which is taking place
at the Pete Dye-designed Tournament Player Club Louisiana in Avondale.
The three-time winner of 2010, McDowell stepped into the tournament with problems. His short game was not accurate and his driver was not supporting his swings. In result of these
two issues, the Northern Irishman compiled a score of 73 in the first round and 75 in the second.
On Friday, the player teed off from the back, perceiving the greens to be less hard there, but could not relish much luck. He dropped two back-to-back shots starting from the par-4,
13th right after picking a birdie on the opening hole at the back. The loss was huge, but the crowd did not give up their faith in the player, who had the legacy of turning tables in his favour. To their surprise, they were wrong. McDowell double-bogeyed
the immediate hole and washed away their last hopes of watching their favourite star rise into the top.
The 31-year-old tried to undo the loss, but it was irreversible. He picked up a birdie and wrapped the back nine with a score of 2-over par.
He dropped two more shots in the front and packed his bags after missing the cut, which was pre-defined at par.
Similar fate was met by Rose, who stepped into the second round with a luggage of two double-bogeys and two bogeys. The Englishman tried to make a comeback, but failed miserably. He
teed off from the front and reeled two birdies against equal bogeys to compile a score at par. He walked towards the closing nine holes with a long face and could not create much difference, as he dropped two shots in two of the opening three holes, which
shovelled him into the darkest pit of danger.
Rose tried to fight the hard greens and the wind, but could not vow the lady luck on his side. The Englishman bogeyed the 15th, birdied the 18th and capped the
two-day session with an aggregate of 7-over par to miss the cut.
