Graeme McDowell awarded Writers' Trophy
Graeme McDowell became the first Irishman to win the Writers’ trophy today. G-Mac was named player of the year by the golf writers due to all the success he has had this year.
McDowell won the US Open this year and in effect claimed the first major of his career. Winning a prestigious event such as the Open, McDowell got a good boost of confidence. The European Ryder Cup team was second in the poll.
On number three is Martin Kaymer, who won the Race to Dubai this year, and fourth was world number one, Lee Westwood. McDowell also shared the European Tour Golfer of the year award with Kaymer.
The player from Portrush really made news by winning the Open this year. He became the first European to win the event since Tony Jacklin in 1970. Not only did G-Mac become a major winner, he also scored the winning putt for the
Europeans in the Ryder Cup. Even though it was a team effort, the winning hole meant a lot and caused McDowell to emerge as the Ryder Hero. His list of accomplishments also includes his win at the Wales Open at Celtic Manor and the Andalucía Masters are Valderrama.
McDowell’s most recent victory was at the Chevron World Challenge in California. Hosted by Tiger Woods, Graeme performed really well at the Challenge. The tournament was the last event the former number one, Woods would play in
2010. Since he had not won an event yet, Tiger really wanted to win at least once this year. Even though Tiger was leading the tournament at one point, at the end, McDowell and Woods went in a playoff. Graeme defeated Woods in the playoff, won the tournament,
and left the golf legend without a win this season. This was the first time in Tiger’s career history that he had not won a title.
Graeme was really happy to be a part of the European Tour. He said that European golf has amazing quality and it is not going to stop here.
"I am hugely honoured to win such a prestigious award and especially in a year when European golf as a whole has achieved such amazing things," said McDowell.
"To win a major championship and to hole the winning putt in the Ryder Cup, these are absolute, ultimate golfing dreams for me.”
