Graeme McDowell ends Players Championship in vain
Graeme McDowell wrapped the $9.5 million-Players Championship tied in the 33rd place after signing for a 79 in the final round.
The Northern Irishman teed off from the front and produced a scorecard in shades of orange, which denotes bogeys on the Professional Golf Association tour. He picked up the sole birdie of the day on the par-4 fifth, misleading the crowd to think that it
was only the start.
Once again, after losing the balance in the swings, the 2010 US Open winner dropped three shots on the front and wrapped it with a score of 2-over par.
On his way to the back, the fifth seed of the world, bogeyed two more holes before double bogeying the par-3 17th and wrapped the day with a score beyond the realms of par. He signed for 7-under par 79, which left him eight strokes behind the
leaders.
Unlike the McDowell in 2010, the veteran could not jot down impressive stats. He finished third in double-bogeys and 48th in putting stats. Surely, his long game improved immensely, as he attained a 17th place finish in driving distance,
but lacked accuracy. In addition to that, he missed ten of the greens in regulation, which ultimately left a hideous mark on his career stats.
When asked to comment on his performance, McDowell blamed it onto his ‘negative swings’. He said, “Today was you know I didn't even swing it my best this morning, to be honest, but I hung tough this morning. This afternoon I make a bomb on 5 to really get
going. And I stand up on 6 and adjust make a negative swing and hit it in the right trees there. I stand up on 7 and react to the right shot and hit it left to the water, you know”.
He also talked about the morning conditions, which made the greens wet and harder. He added that he had to complete the third round in the morning, which tested his nerves to the extent that he got exhausted.
McDowell wrapped the day in shame, but if he continues to perform with the same pace, then he is likely to lose his bid of defending his title at the US Open.
