Graeme McDowell ends his trophy drought at World Challenge
Graeme McDowell carded yet another four-under 68 at the Sherwood Golf and Country Club, ending his two-year-long trophy drought.
McDowell won the 2012 World Challenge by three strokes, fending off challenges from the likes of Keegan Bradley.
The Irishman got off to a slow start, as he could only card a lone birdie on the front nine. However, he turned things around on the back nine and shot a four-under 68.
The world number 24 carded four birdies and a bogey on the back nine, as he finished off his season in style.
"It's been too long. It's been a h**l of a two years since I sat here as a winner," McDowell said.
"We all put winning up on a pedestal as the ultimate goal. We like to say that it's all about the process and going through the motions and trying to get better. But let's be honest. We all measure ourselves by the win. I can say that now".
Keegan Bradley gave Graeme a tough time on the field, although the score paints a different picture. The American carded a three-under 69 for the day. He needed to push up his score a little, but could not do so, as McDowell blitzed on the back nine.
It has been a terrific performance from the European Ryder Cupper, as he has led the tournament over the last three rounds.
Winless for over two years, people questioned his ability to win tournaments, but he has answered his critics in style by winning in the toughest of conditions.
"This really caps off my season," McDowell said. "We try not to put winning on a pedestal, but this one feels very sweet because it's been a grind all year".
The Irishman’s success at the Sherwood Golf and Country Club has largely been due to his putting. Graeme has been in sublime putting form, although he missed a few approach shots, but compensated them with his putting.
Tiger Woods must have been disappointed because he would have liked to finish on a high note, nevertheless, it has been a terrific season for him as well.
