Graeme McDowell expects US Open to be a high scoring event – Golf News
While many players are expecting the US Open to be a low scoring event this season, Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell disagrees with such statements and believes that it will not be an easy task to post low scores this week at
the Merion Golf Club.
The second major championship of the season is set to begin on June 13, with the top notch players from different parts of the world ready to feature their best games on the venue course.
Talking to the reporters in the media room at the Merion Golf Club, the 2010 US Open champion said that people have underestimated the venue course and it will be really difficult to create birdie chances, especially after the
heavy rains that hit the area last weekend.
"I don't think it's going to be a low-scoring US Open," said McDowell. "I hope it's not going to be a low-scoring US Open. Everyone is saying that it's going to be 62s and 63s on this golf course, which I kind of disagree with
at the minute. I think they're underestimating it.”
"I think there are ten or 11 holes on this course that are as tough as any US Open I've seen. The last five holes, I can't think of a tougher finish at a US Open,” added the Northern Irishman, who finished second last year at the
hard and fast Olympic Club.
He also said that the firm and faster course will certainly help a player like him who plays short off the tee. According to him, it will be a bit advantage for him to focus on his accuracy, rather than on distance.
On the other hand, the long hitters will have to control their shots in a bid to keep the ball on the right track.
McDowell is currently enjoying a great run of form this season, as he recorded a playoff victory at the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage, followed by a stunning 2 & 1 victory over Thongchai Jaidee in the European Tour’s Volvo World Match
Play Championship.
That is the reason why he is being lauded as one of the strongest contenders for a victory this week in Ardmore.
