Graeme McDowell extends his support for Barclays Singapore Open as fifth major
Irishman Graeme McDowell has not been performing well for quite a while, but he rarely lets go of a chance to express his opinion and word on controversial issues relating the sport. Winner of the 2010 US Open, McDowell has not won a single title in the
current year and has now dropped to number 15 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) from a high of number five earlier in the year. McDowell will be starting off his bid for the lucrative WGC HSBC Championship at the scenic Sheshan International Golf
Club this week and threw his weight behind the Barclays Singapore Open, terming it as one of the most appropriate event which should be considered for a fifth major outside of Europe and US.
“The Barclays Singapore Open is one of the biggest tournaments of our season, globally,” said McDowell. “It has always had a strong field fighting for a piece of the excellent prize fund. Barclays are great sponsors of big tournaments all over the world,
and none more so than in Singapore, so it is an event many of us look forward to as the season comes to a close.”
While McDowell might have weight in his remarks regarding the Barclays Singapore Open, it doesn’t go without saying that the Irishman might have spoken in favour of the event on request by the sponsors. Many of the golf critics consider McDowell’s more than
often rhetoric’s as unnecessary and overboard. Many of the golf fans often go the extent of saying that McDowell speaks as if he has won ten majors rather than just one. The 32-year-old Ulsterman also spoke in favour of a European Tour event in Ireland after
Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy’s respective victories in major events.
Barclays Singapore Open is one of the older golf events on the Asian Turf and the Sentosa Golf Course is considered one of the fine courses in the continent. Singapore being the hub of economic and financial activity in Asia, also has the capability to lure
in major sponsors for the event if in case the Barclays Singapore Open is revamped into a major event.
“As a venue, Sentosa is perfect to host a major. And the course is great, so yeah, it has certainly got potential to become a major.” McDowell further added.
McDowell won his last event the Andalucía Valderrama Masters in 2010 and has not won a single title in last one year. He also failed to defend his Andalucía Valderrama Masters title a fort night ago, where the Sergio Garcia posted his second consecutive
victory on the European Tour. McDowell won the Wales Open title last year and crossed the Atlantic to pull in his first major victory in the sport. Since then, the Ulsterman has been lurking in obscurity in attempts to break his winless streak.
