Graeme McDowell finds lost glory with 69 in Players Championship
World-number 5, Graeme McDowell, found his mojo in the second round of the $9.5 million Professional Golf Association tour’s Players Championship. He compiled a score of 8-under par in the two-day session to occupy third place on the leader board.
The Northern Irishman had been facing a problem with swings since the start of the season. Initially, he lost his long game and then his short game started to wear-off too. This resulted in the veteran losing cuts in three of ten starts.
However, after hiring the services of Pete Cowan, the player is regaining his swing.
The fruit of the struggle showed up in the second round of the Players Championship, in which McDowell teed off from the front and reeled seven birdies to take a share in third place. The 32-year old veteran picked up two birdies in the front without dropping
a stroke and capped the day with a score of 2-under par 34.
On his way to the back, the player birdied the first-two holes with the same ease, as he rolled birdies into the holes. Unable to keep the bogey-free charm, the veteran dropped a shot into the water on the immediate hole and in an urge of taking it out,
he double-bogeyed it. He dropped two more shots and capped the day with a score of 3-under par, which left him two strokes behind the leader.
Looking at the stats, the player improved in his putting and green hits in regulation (GIR) stats. He relished a success rate of 83 percent in GIR, which meant that he hit 15 greens and missed only three.
Despite that, the player was happy with his game. While talking to the press he said, “Yeah, up-and-down day a little bit. Well, did not play great the first four, or, five holes. Hung tough with some good par saves. And then kind of got things going a little
bit, made some good swings, left a couple of putts out there around the turn, but made the turn 2-under, made a great putt on 10 and birdied 11”.
McDowell stands in the top three players on the leader board, but will he keep himself vaulted there remains to be seen.
