Graeme McDowell leaves the Quail Hollow field - Golf News
Graeme McDowell will not be a part of the published field of the Wells Fargo Championship at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, scheduled to start from May 3, 2012.
McDowell announced his withdrawal from the event, as he wanted to make preparations for the Players Championship, which is also known as the fifth major event of the year.
In addition to that, he has a busy schedule ahead of him, which includes some of the big tournaments. Therefore, he preferred not to play at Quail Hollow and joined the league of many other big names who are taking this week off.
"With my upcoming busy schedule, I have withdrawn from the Wells Fargo event this week. I was a little under the weather both physically and with my game last week. Very much wanted to play Quail Hollow, but didn't want to go there undercooked," he tweeted
Monday. "Practice and rest for me this week. See you at Players".
The top three players of the last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans were already confirmed to miss the tournament this year.
Jason Dufner is getting married and Ernie Els and Luke Donald are making preparations for the Players Championship.
Similarly, McDowell believes that a little work on his putting will greatly help him in the upcoming tournament, as he was struggling with it in New Orleans.
"It was more of the same," he tweeted. "Drove it great, iron play was average and didn't chip and putt well".
In the meantime, Rory McIlroy will be seen in action for the first time since his appearance in the Masters Tournament last month.
McIlroy decided to take four weeks off following the Masters, as he wanted to spend some time with his girl friend, Caroline Wozniacki, while remaining off the course.
Moreover, he will be defending the US Open title six weeks from now. According to McIlroy, the Olympic Club course in San Francisco will be a tougher course compared to the Congressional venue that hosted the major championship last year.
In 1989, Curtis Strange was the last player to defend the US Open title successfully. Therefore, it will be a great challenge for the 22-year-old Irishman to prove his mettle next month.
