Graeme McDowell loses despite an errorless round at Accenture Match Play Championship – Golf News
Graeme McDowell again found himself in a similar position when Ye Yang repeated history by defeating him 2&1 at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain, Arizona, on Wednesday, February 22, 2012.
The former was looking to avenge his last year’s defeat against Ye Yang in the Accenture Match Play Championship, but the event unfolded contrary to his expectation.
Last year, McDowell faced Yang in the third round and this year saw him lose in the opening round of the event.
Even his six birdies were not enough to outclass his opponent, as they were just one shot behind Yang’s seven birdies in total.
"You just run into the wrong guy on the wrong day, and you have got your work cut out. I didn't take care of business, so I'm disappointed, yeah," a frustrated McDowell told reporters.
"He beat me last year and he seems to have my number a little bit, you know. I have a tendency to bring out the best in guys around this track for some reason," he added.
According to McDowell, the turning point of the game was the par-four seventh hole when he missed an easy birdie putt, following a spectacular successful 15-foot attempt for birdie by the South Korean.
This is the third time that McDowell has to leave the World Golf Championship event in the opening round in his five appearances in total.
This makes him more frustrated and disappointed, especially after displaying a phenomenal game on the course.
"I have played better than that every year I have been here, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles with this tournament," the 32-year-old said.
He added by saying that he feels weird packing his bags early in the morning at a resort where he loves to stay.
However, the course at Dove Mountain has never helped him make any difference and he always has to leave early in the events.
Nonetheless, his performance in the match was worth watching, as he was seen in a perfect form, making some quality shots to impress his fans.
It will not be wrong to say that it was not McDowell who played bad and lost. In fact, it was Yang who was a little better to snatch the victory from his hands.
