Graeme McDowell loses the Volvo World Match Play Championship, Nicolas Colsaerts wins
Graeme McDowell was defeated in the final round of the Volvo World Match Play Championship, securing the runner-up position.
The 32-year-old Northern Irish professional came quite close to victory, but was unable to win against Nicolas Colsaerts, at the Finca Cortesin, Casares in Andalucía, Spain.
McDowell was disappointed. He was planning to be the proud winner and was delivering his best. However, Colsaerts's impressive score stopped him for achieving the glory of the title.
"The elements played a huge part," McDowell said. "I'm disappointed that they probably came out the winner today rather than the two players. They really played into his hands the way he drove the ball. He's got a great wind game and he's a fantastic talent.
I got beat by the better man".
He started the event on Thursday, defeating Robert Karlsson in the first round in an impressive style. He boosted his confidence and recorded another win in the second round afternoon sessions, against Jbe Kruger by 4&3 scores.
After being impressive in both the rounds, he defeated Richard Finch and Sergio Garcia in the third and qualified for the semi finals.
On Sunday, he faced Rafael Cabrera Bello in the semi finals and won the round. He then moved to the biggest round on the same day and competed against Colsaerts.
McDowell was impressive throughout the day, but Colsaerts delivered his best and did not give Northern Irishman a chance to win.
"I had to dig deep all day, the conditions this afternoon were brutal and we had to fight and grind all the way. I can't feel anything right now, to have my name on this trophy - it's a dream come true. When you play Graeme in these conditions you know it's
going to be tough because he's (Northern) Irish and plays lots of links golf".
Colsaerts recorded his second European Tour win and is now planning to try his level best to win in upcoming tournaments.
On the other hand, McDowell is also hoping to be the winner in the near future. He is also dreaming to be in the Ryder Cups’ European Team, another mega event staged in September 2012.
