Graeme McDowell misses cut at the BMW PGA Championship
Graeme McDowell missed the cut at the BMW PGA Championship, as he shot a 1-over 73 in the second round of the European Tour event.
The 32-year-old Northern Irishman faced tough challenges at the Wentworth Club in Surrey, England.
He scored a 2-over 74 in the first round, and made four birdies and three bogeys. He was also penalised with two strokes on the 18th hole, as his ball moved a fraction and rolled into bushes.
He carded a bogey on the 18th, but due to the two-stroke penalty, it eventually became a triple-bogey shot. For ending the round with three over pars on the final hole, he dropped to a far lower position on the leaderboard.
“I probably should have called for a referee - that would have saved me one shot, but what are you supposed to do - the whole area was sort of bouncing,” McDowell said. “I was aware of it and asked for it to be looked at. The rules are there for everybody's
protection”.
He added:
“I was literally 10 feet away. Looking back, I’m not sure what I could have done. The ball was perched until I got 10 feet from it. At that point it was too late. Just kind of one of those freak scenarios in golf”.
However, after finishing the first round, he admitted that it was his fault.
He was hoping to improve his performance in the second round. However, he was unable to record appealing scores and again faced tough challenges to score well on Friday.
McDowell scored two birdies, an eagle and five devastating bogeys in total. His under-par score was simply awesome, but he was unable to save bogeys and dropped to the 81st leaderboard position and missed the cut.
The minimum criterion to make the cut was 1-over 145. He scored a 3-over 147 in both the rounds and needed two strokes to make the cut.
This may be the worst week for McDowell’s life, as he faced a two-stroke penalty and also did not perform well. He needs to focus more on his putting and performance, so that he can lead in the upcoming tournaments.
