Graeme McDowell off to an unimpressive start at the Shell Houston Open - Golf News
Graeme McDowell, who is looking to get his form back prior to the start of the Masters Tournament next week, had an unimpressive start at the Shell Houston Open on Thursday, March 29, 2012.
Before entering the field of the Redstone Golf Club Tournament Course in Humble, Texas, he said:
"I think if it had been another week like Bay Hill last week, which was very difficult, very mentally demanding, I think maybe going into Augusta next week that might have been a little too much".
“But I think they just got the golf course just right here as far as level of difficulty, and, like I say, just the little details and extra mile to go here at the Shell Houston Open just to make everyone’s preparation as good as it could possibly be for
the Masters next week,” he added.
However, he went two-over early in the first round with a double bogey on the par-four 12th hole. He tried to get back in contention with two birdies on the 15th and the 18th hole.
Moreover, three consecutive birdies starting from the fourth hole took him to three-under.
At the end of the round, his score converted to two-under par 70 because of the bogey on the par-five eighth hole.
According to McDowell, he was not expecting such a bad start to his round. Moreover, a bogey at the end of the round really shattered his morale.
He said that he could have easily managed to avoid the bogey on the 17th hole. However, he misjudged the shot from the bunker that went across the green to find the water hazard on the course.
After suffering the penalty, he again chipped to get close to the pin with six and a half feet.
On the very next hole, he hit a pretty good drive to find the green with a distance of 34 feet from the pin.
His birdie putt could not reach the hole and stopped around two and a half feet off the hole.
He was among the 51 players who managed to complete their round before the bad weather interrupted the game, forcing the officials to call off the day.
