Graeme McDowell plays a see-saw game of birdies and bogeys at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans – Golf News
Graeme McDowell got off to a mixed start, as he carded eight birdies and five bogeys in the opening round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, to finish four strokes behind the leaders, Ken Duke and Cameron Tringale.
He started his round on the back nine of the course and waited 10 holes to sign a par shot for the first time in the round.
Thereafter, he carded five par shots, followed by another bogey-birdie-birdie-bogey run to finish off his first-round campaign.
Overall, it was an interesting display by McDowell. He played some really good shots and succeeded in making good putts.
The only problem he faced was that he lacked consistency throughout the round. One hole saw him go to the peak and the other witnessed him falter.
According to McDowell, he was feeling exhausted after his appearance in the Masters Tournament. That was the reason behind his sloppy performance on some of the holes in the opening round.
However, he now plans to focus and try to overcome the mistakes that he made on Thursday, in order to improve his position on the leaderboard.
Meanwhile, the Masters Champion Bubba Watson was also seen struggling with his game, as he carded a one-under par 71 to sit six strokes behind the leading pace.
Watson also blamed exhaustion for his casual performance where signing low scores was an easy job, especially for a player like him who recently won his first major.
"My body is not where it wants to be," Bubba moaned after his round. "You know, I can't hit shots that I want to hit and make putts. I'm struggling out there. Just exhausted. Mentally exhausted”.
"My good week this week will be making the cut and that's what me and my caddie joked about all day," he added.
"I'm just drained. Hitting the ball full bore tires me out. I have to take deep breaths trying to get some energy".
The world number two Luke Donald also failed to impress his fans, as he carded a one-over par 73 to share the 102nd spot.
