Graeme McDowell ready for a tough battle against Ye Yang – Golf News
The Northern Ireland’s professional golfer, Graeme McDowell, looks forward to defeating South Korea’s Ye Yang in the opening round of the Accenture Match Play Championships, officially starting from Wednesday, February 22, 2012.
Yang is the same person who spoiled McDowell’s dream of entering the second round of the event a year before.
Therefore, McDowell has now the chance of redemption when he will face his last year’s conqueror.
“I have some unfinished business to take care of from last year,” remarked McDowell, who is kick-starting his US Tour season in what he describes as “the start of a really exciting seven weeks leading up to the Masters. I don’t want the first week to be
a short one”.
According to McDowell, he is well prepared for the upcoming WGC, as he played two back-to-back European Tour events.
He appeared at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and the Qatar Masters in the recent past.
Moreover, he appreciated the idea of pairing him against Yang, as he really admires him as one of the best golfers around the world.
“Yang is a top, top player and a tougher opener. But I look on it as a good draw. Not that I need added focus for any match I play in this format,” he said.
“There is never such a thing as an easy draw. Every opponent you face is going to be a top player. It’s just a matter of who grinds the match out better on the day,” he added.
While McDowell will be playing against Yang, world number two, Rory McIlroy will be competing against George Coetzee, whereas Darren Clarke will feature against Nick Watney.
Moreover, if McDowell succeeds to take Yang down in his tournament opener, he may face Hunter Mahan, whom he defeated in the 2010’s decisive singles match.
Therefore, Mahan will also be interested in McDowell’s win, as he would like to take revenge of the hostile defeat that he suffered two years ago.
Mahan is paired against Zach Johnson in the first round. He is considered a favourite for the win. However, Johnson can give him a tough time because of his excellent putting technique.
