Graeme McDowell returns to his form with a victory at the 2013 RBC Heritage
Graeme McDowell parred the first extra hole in the playoffs of the 2013 RBC Heritage, to record his first professional victory after two seasons. He is now gearing up for a full-blown comeback after what he says two transitional years.
McDowell exhibited remarkable performances throughout the 2010 season, winning some of the most prestigious events. Thereafter, the Northern Irish star lost in his past wins, and remained winless in both the last two seasons.
Now that the 33-year-old Northern Irishman has once again proved his worth by recording another PGA Tour victory, he now plans to keep the momentum going into the upcoming events he is scheduled to participate in.
Entering the final round of the event, McDowell was sharing the fourth spot on the leaderboard. He then birdied three of the first 17 holes that he played, and was holding the sole lead while standing the 18th tee.
Thereafter, he failed to turn in the ball for par, and had to concede a bogey, which allowed Web Simpson to stand right beside him.
The Northern Irishman did not lose hope and when Simpson missed his try for the par putt on the first extra hole, McDowell took advantage of the situation and recorded a par putt to confirm his victory in the tournament.
Talking to the reporters after winning the event, he said that the weather conditions were really difficult to play in, and the strong winds did not allow many golf players to record low scores.
“It was really, really difficult. Very gusty wind conditions,” he said. “You really had to pick your moment, pick your shot. The key today was a few big par saves early on. I made a big par save on 6. In fact, a couple earlier than that, but really hung
in there well with the putter.”
“I held on extremely well, which you've got to do in these type of conditions,” he added. “I really flighted the ball well off the tee. I really kept it in play most of the week. Was in trouble very rarely on this golf course.”
