Graeme McDowell secures third victory of the season at Alstom Open de France – Golf news
Graeme McDowell fired a four-under par 67 in the final round of the 2013 Alstom Open de France to claim his third European Tour title victory of the season.
The tournament was being staged at the Le Golf National, featuring some of the best players from different parts of the world.
McDowell is currently enjoying a magical year that has witnessed him either winning or missing the cut, in each of the starts he has made so far this season.
Last week, he participated in the Irish Open and missed the cut. This allowed him to work on his game on the weekend before flying to France, where he showed his class throughout the tournament.
Entering the final round, he was five-under for the tournament and was sharing the top spot with Richard Sterne, who eventually finished second at the end of the event.
On day four, he started with a birdie on the first hole, followed by gaining another shot on the fifth hole. He then conceded a bogey on seventh, his only blemish of the day.
A birdie on the ninth hole allowed him to reach the turn in two under. The back nine of the course witnessed him adding another two shots to his scorecard to finish with a nine-under par tournament score.
“It's very special after the last couple of months,” McDowell admitted. “It's been a bit of a battle. It's been a funny year. My game has not felt far away most weeks but I have missed a lot more cuts than normal and missing cuts hurts.”
“It certainly motivated me a lot the last few weeks. The US Open was a tough one to take and missing the cut in Ireland last week; it made me more hungry to want to be in positions like I was this afternoon,” he added.
Sterne, in the meantime, was just one stroke behind McDowell entering the 16th hole. However, back-to-back bogeys on the next two holes ruined his chances of making a charge to the top of the leaderboard. On the final hole, he successfully drained
a par putt to finish four strokes behind McDowell.
