Graeme McDowell shines in sunshine state at The Players Championship
2010 US Open winner, Graeme McDowell is in the headlines once again and that too after a long time. McDowell now has a good chance of winning the world’s richest tournament, The Players Championship. Also known as the unofficial fifth major, the Players
Championship is currently taking place at TPC Saw grass in Florida.
The player opened with an amazing 67 and after posting a 69 in the
second round, he is among the top names on the leader board. 2011 hasn’t proved to be that good of a year for the player as he missed three out of his first four cuts. This bad luck started for the Northern Irishman when he posted an 80 at Bay Hill. The player
said that he couldn’t piece anything together and kept having discouraging thoughts, fearing whether he would ever win again.
“I think everything flashes through my mind. I sacked everyone, rehired them, and probably sacked them again. It’s just the craziness of this sport - you never really know what's around the corner,” said McDowell. “That's why we love this game, it's why
we hate it and it's why it keeps us coming back for more.”
Feeling optimistic this weekend, the player really wanted to be in contention and hence, achieved his goal. McDowell spent last weekend with coach Pete Cowen and his hard work was clearly evident by the way he played his first two rounds. The player, who
even defeated Tiger Woods last year, said that he has altered his swing a bit and has really been working hard to improve.
The player started off really well on Friday as he birdied his first hole. Going slow and steady in the remaining holes, McDowell posted another birdie on the eighth hole. The player really set the golf course on fire on the back nine when he made the turn
at two under par.
The 31-year-old McDowell double bogeyed the twelfth hole however, after making back to back birdies on the 10th and 11th hole, and followed that up with another birdie at the 13th hole. The player ended his second round with
a birdie on the eighteenth.
