Graeme McDowell snatches Chevron World Challenge title from Tiger Woods
In an impressive recovery, European golfing star Graeme McDowell overtook Tiger Woods’ four-shot lead to clinch the Chevron World Challenge on the playoff hole, at the Sherwood Country Club in California.
American number one Woods and McDowell gave each other a tough challenge. But it was McDowell’s day as he outclassed the former world number two with a remarkable game of golf. The northern Irishman carded a brilliant birdie from
a distance of twenty feet after the American legend missed a chance at a putt to claim the title.
The Chevron World Challenge victory is the fourth title victory of the season for Ryder Cup star McDowell. According to sports critics, the current year has been a brilliant one for the 31-year-old, whose staggering performance
in the prestigious Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor Resort helped the European team win the tournament.
McDowell is very well aware of the fact that this season was probably one of the best of his sparkling career. After winning the Chevron World Challenge, the US Open champ expressed his sheer excitement to the media and said that
he was delighted with his performance.
Meanwhile, the year remained under par for former world champ Woods. This is the first time that Woods has been unable to win a title all year. However, his more recent performances have been appreciated by fans and sports critics
alike. His performance in the Chevron World Challenge has been largely impressive and should give him a strong boost for the upcoming season. Woods dominated the tournament from the start, but it was on the final day that the 34-year-old was not very lucky;
he managed to record the final day’s play at 73 under par whereas McDowell scored a 69 under par.
McDowell fired a five par to shorten the gap between him and Woods and later birdied another to push his score even closer to Tiger’s. The Irishman remained strong throughout the final round of the event and dominated the day’s
play till the end to clinch the victory.
McDowell later said that Tiger Woods is one of the best golfers of the world and winning an event against him is a dream come true. McDowell also said that Woods has improved his game and will perform more strongly in the next
season.
On the other hand, Woods seemed satisfied with his performance and told the media that the final round of the event was pretty unexpected for him. He stated that he was happy with his improving performance, despite not being able
to win the tournament, adding that he was confident about a better performance in the upcoming season.
Englishman Paul Casey took third place on the scoreboard, followed by Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy.
