Graeme McDowell succumbs to conditions
After the first round ended, there was a huge thunderstorm at the Kiawah Island and it was assumed that conditions would be tougher on the second day of the PGA Championship and so it proved to be.
Everybody found it extremely tough. There were only three under par scores, even the first round’s leader, Carl Pettersson, shot a 2-over-par.
The best round was shot by Vijay Singh, he shot 3-under par. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ian Poulter are the other three players who shot under par scores.
After day two, there was a three-way tie at the top with Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and Carl Pettersson leading the pack.
The conditions were extremely tough on the second day and hardly anybody got going. Graeme McDowell who had a decent first round faltered badly in the second. He shot a disappointing four-over par to be tied at the 11th position after the first
two rounds.
Tiger is playing extremely well, the way he handled the conditions was magnificent and it looks as if he is right on course for his 15th major.
The disappointment of the day came from the Northern Irishman, Graeme McDowell. After shooting a brilliant four-under par in the first round, he could not cope up with the pressure.
"It is one of the toughest set-ups in a major I have seen in a long time," McDowell said. "It's brutal".
McDowell knows that he needs to pull up his socks fairly quickly if he wants to challenge the players on top of the leaderboard. He is currently four shots adrift of the leader Vijay Singh and in conditions such as these, chances would be very less.
The winds were absolutely scary on the second day and they were the main reason for such disappointing scores by the players.
“It was just about set-up. It was a tough set-up on a calm day, and with a 30-mile-an-hour wind across this course, you have got a serious test of golf on your hands – 75 or below are a decent score out there, I really believe that. Vijay’s 69, that’s a
serious score”.
McDowell believes that the conditions are just like a links course but the golf course itself is not designed that way, which makes this course even more difficult.
