Graeme McDowell wants to see Ernie Els in the field of the Masters
Graeme McDowell has a soft heart, he wanted to see Ernie Els in the field of the Masters, the first major of the year.
Els worked hard and tried his level best to make it before the masters, but he was unable to qualify for the first major and mega purse event of the year.
The 42-year-old South African professional golf player currently holds the 58th position in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Firstly, the minimum requirement to play the Masters Tournament is to be among the top-fifty.
Secondly, a player has to win at least one tournament in the current season. Devastatingly, Els has not won any of the titles in 2012, nor is he among the top-50 rankings.
He played five PGA Tour staged events since January, one World Golf Championship tournament and one unofficial event, but did not finish any of the events on the top.
Nevertheless, he won three major titles in the past, two at the US Open and one at The Open Championship.
Moreover, he has not missed any of the editions of the Masters Tournament in 18 years.
Having a tremendous career record inspires McDowell and he thinks that Els should be given an exceptional invitation for the Masters.
"When a guy like Ernie Els misses a Major, it's obviously disappointing," the 32-year-old Northern Irish professional said.
He continued, "He was one of my heroes in the '90s when he was winning his US Opens. He's a quality player and he has given it (qualification) a great run the last couple of weeks".
On the other hand, the officials have given Ryo Ishikawa a special invitation and left Els on the side.
This decision is not justified and to make the tournament more successful, there should be an exceptional entry for the South African.
McDowell is making a strong appeal to the Master selection committee. He tried to convince the officials that the 64-time professional tournament winner should be allowed to play the Masters Tournament.
“I think if you took a poll among the players as to guys who deserve the invite, he'd be top of the list, that's for sure. The idea of him not being there is disappointing, a blow for the field,” McDowell added.
Now, Els only has a chance at the Shell Houston Open. This PGA staged event is the last tournament before the Masters.
If Els wins, he will play the Masters, else there is no other possibility left for him but to miss the major event this year.
