http://www.senore.com/Cricket/GC-Smith-c1473 is proud to be Proteas’ Captain - Cricket News Update
South African captain Graeme Smith has started the first Test at the Oval as his 100th match for his country, and takes great pride in achieving the feat.
"I'm quite proud that it's in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013, where I've enjoyed some important milestones throughout my career," Smith told BBC Sport.
Smith had a brilliant start to his career, making a crucial 68 on his debut against the mighty Australians, led by the legendary http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stephen-Rodger-Waugh-c91216. Now, himself a legend, Smith knows that it wasn’t always a smooth ride to be at a point of his career where he’s
today.
"It's a long time to have been captain and it's been a challenge, but I've taken it in my stride," the 31-year-old added.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 clinched their
first series win in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, which remains his greatest moment.
However, Smith’s biggest regret was not to win a major tournament which eluded the Proteas even 21 years after their return to international cricket from Apartheid ban, which had left them out of the cricketing arena for more than a decade.
Following another World Cup disappointment - this time in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, Smith decided to resign from the limited-over formats and even considered over resigning from leading the Test side.
The 31-year-old however, decided to stay put, giving credit to the former teammate and now coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gary-Kirsten-c58527, who prevented him from taking such a decision, and attributes his recent success to his coach and team management.
"I feel quite renewed in the job since Gary and the current management team. The encouragement that they gave me to carry on has given me a new lease of life."
"I still have a goal to play international cricket for a period of time. I'm excited for what the next few years have in store. Whether I captain for all that time, I don't know. That's something that will unfold," the left-hander concluded.
