Graeme Smith under fire for not returning home after ICC 2011 World Cup campaign
Proteas skipper, Graeme Smith is currently under fire in South Africa’s media for not returning home and staying back in India.
Media reports suggest that Graeme Smith did this only to avoid tax that was compulsory to be paid on his return.
Smith is currently in Ireland to visit his girlfriend “Morgan Deane”. She is a famous star in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751.
Smith is not only criticized for staying in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 in order to avoid the tax obligations but he has also accused of being scared to face the nation as his team “choked” again at the later stages of the tournament.
The reason behind the whole Smith saga is his present teammate Francois “Faf” du Plessis. Talking to a radio station, du Plessis, put forward a controversial statement in which he revealed that the skipper didn’t return to South Africa in order to avail
a tax exemption.
CEO of Cricket South Africa “Gerald Majola” supported, Captain Graeme Smith, as he expressed that Smith’s demand was sanctioned by the manager of the team.
But it’s basically the law of South Africa which is to be blamed. According to the law concerned “South African residents, who are out of the country for at least 183 days of a tax year with 60 of them being consecutive days, gain exemption from paying tax
here”.
So in order to make full use of the law, Smith decided to enjoy the privileges of this law like any other South African citizen.
Smith met the requirements of law by not returning to South Africa and stayed back in India for the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Smiths’s agent told the press that Smith is also a citizen of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 and he has all the rights to avail the country’s law.
Smith’s agent, Craig Livingstone, said like any person who spends time outside the country, (Smith) becomes eligible for those tax benefits. Businessmen and other sportsmen are entitled to them, so why shouldn't Graeme be"?
Livingstone also emphasized on the fact and cleared all misconceptions about Graeme Smith continuing as the captain of the team by highlighting that he should not be criticized as he is no longer the skipper.
