http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013’s premier spinner, Graeme Swann, says that undergoing another elbow surgery remains his ‘worst fear’; however, he is determined to do anything and avoid a second operation.
"That is my worst fear at the minute," he said. "When I had surgery before it was ten times the problem it is now.
After suffering a morale-sapping defeat at Oval, the Poms’ no.1 ranked Test status hangs by a thread where a another loss could spell doom and allow http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 to become the new champions of the longer version.
Amidst all the buildup to the Headingley clash, Swann’s injury has become a major talking point and a serious worry for the hosts, who desperately need their ace spinner to be at the top of his game. He had an uneventful time in the opening encounter, sending down 52 overs – the highest he has ever bowled without taking a wicket.
The elbow injury is not the usual ‘run of the mill’, as he had to undergo an extensive operation three years back, where renowned surgeon Shawn O’ Driscoll removed 26 fragments of bone, leaving just three which were too close to the nerve.
Swann described it as a ‘career-saving surgery’ in his autobiography, ‘The Breaks are Off’. He has been the preferred spinner ever since his recovery, and further had little to no injury scare until the ongoing home summer.
He was left out of the final ODI against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746. He also needed injections before the first Test against the Proteas and was advised by the ECB to sit out the County games ahead of the second clash, which begins from August 2.
Swann is simply hoping to see out his career without a need of another operation.
“I'll have to cross that bridge when I come to it. I'm hoping not because realistically, if I look at the age I am and what have you, if I can just get to the end of my playing days and my arm falls off the next day sort of thing, I'm quite happy with that. I don't want to have another operation if I can help it because it's horrendous."
