Graeme Swann leaves http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Australia-c844 in a spin
England’s Graeme Swann has given South Australia’s batsmen a taste of his spin magic, taking four wickets in the home side’s first innings of the tour match at the Adelaide Oval.
The Redbacks began day two on 26 without loss, chasing England’s 288-8 (declared), but were ultimately dismissed for 221, with Swann doing most of the damage as he racked up figures of 4-68 from 22.4 overs.
Able support was provided by James Anderson, the swing bowler capturing three wickets while conceding 62 runs from 17 overs. Young paceman Steven Finn contributed two wickets to the cause, including claiming the scalp of Australia Ashes hopeful Callum Ferguson.
Ferguson, who could be in line for a baggy green if Australia’s struggling middle-order fails to fire when the Ashes get underway, was caught on 35 as like so many of South Australia’s recognised batsmen he made a start but was unable to build it into a more imposing score.
England skipper Andrew Strauss, however, had no such problems as he finished the day on 56 not out while out-of-form opener Alastair Cook was also unbeaten at stumps on day two, and will resume tomorrow needing 13 more runs to make his first half-century of the tour.
Meanwhile, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Queensland-c834 fast bowler Ryan Harris has continued to push his case for a place in Australia’s Ashes squad, finishing with nine wickets for the match in the Sheffield Shield match between the Bulls and Tasmania.
Ricky Ponting’s return to his state side, however, has offered the Australia skipper little joy. Punter followed a first innings score of 32 for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854 with five in the second. Second choice Australia Test wicketkeeper Tim Paine, however, fared substantially better, top scoring with 74 for the Tigers in their second innings.
In the Sheffield Shield match between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120, who was unbeaten on 71 for NSW at stumps on day two, finished with 113 before Peter Siddle claimed his wicket. Siddle, who is pushing for Test selection after returning from a back injury, finished NSW’s first innings with figures of 2-55.
Also at the SCG, under pressure off-spinner Nathan Hauritz has taken his first two wickets of the match after finishing wicketless in Victoria’s first innings, while paceman Mitchell Starc looks to have had his Ashes dreams dashed with a side strain sustained in the match set to sideline the 20-year-old for four weeks. Starc had impressed for Australia in their final ODI against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 this month, taking 4-27 as the home side broke a seven-match losing streak across all formats.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Victoria-c859’s Cameron White, another who could potentially gain a call-up for a middle-order batting slot in the Ashes, didn’t do much to push his case in his side’s second innings as he was caught behind for seven.
