My husband and I will soon be stationed at Graf this fall. Anyone ever been? Things to do? Will I need to learn to speak German?

And my main question is, how can I receive in the mail information for this place?

  1. my dad used to work in Berlin not too long ago, but we spent many days in American bases around Germany

Someone previously said Grafenwoehr is boring. i think all they had was a bowling alley. Quite frankly, they are right  if you want something to do, Vilseck is a much better place to do things on base. (10 minutes drive) Wurzburg and Bamberg are also other great, bigger bases to visit.

Extensive German may not be needed, but defiantly some basic phrases would be very helpful, practical and security wise.

Grafenwoehr is very small, but is in a very nice setting, compared to other bases. The village is also quite nice for some fun.

hope you enjoy yourself, take any chance to see major cities throughout Germany.

  2. http://www.grafenwoehr.army.mil/

It is kinda in the middle of nowhere with not a lot to do locally but the good news is you are in Europe and can visit another country with a few hours drive.

  3. I'm right now here in Grafenwoehr, my husband is in the service. It is boring place. Huge training area for international Military Grafenwoehr/Vilseck. New PX and Commissary. Nice cities are Amberg, Bamberg, Weiden, Bayreuth, Nuremberg, but you need to drive. Just here in the town is not much to see or to do. Here is the web you can check for your self just type google: Grafenwoehr Germany. You see there the Army stuff.

Winter is cold here and so much snow. You don't need to learn German because here is like little USA so all the Germans speaking English too.

I hope I can help you with this information's. Good Luck ....

  4. We were stationed at the Rose Barracks, which is a half an hour away, for three years.  You will not have to learn German because a lot of the Germans know how to speak English.  Learn how to take the train because that'll allow you a great deal of freedom.  Also, you will have to take a test to get your drivers but it's not too hard.  Germans drive wonderfully but fast.  Jobs on base are hard to come by and so are babysitters.  I thought there was a lot of things to do while I was there, you just have to get out and do them.  Don't be scared to get out and drive or take the train.  I've been to The Chech Republic, Austria, Italy, Amsterdam, and Switerland.  I went to Nurenberg all the time and Amberg.  I loved it!  There is a indoors pool in Amberg that we went to all the time.  It's so much fun and cheap.  Enjoy yourself!  It's a once in a life time opportunity!
