Graham DeLaet remains in contention, Luke Donald charges to make a comeback – Golf News
Graham DeLaet carded a five-under par 67 in the second round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans to finish three strokes behind the halfway leader Jason Dufner, on Friday, April 27, 2012.
DeLaet got off to a great start on the back nine of the course, as he carded a birdie, followed by an eagle on the first two holes that he played.
However, a bogey on the par-four 12th disappointed his fans, especially after such an impressive start.
Therefore, he bounced back strongly and carded another three birdies on the remaining holes to share the eighth spot on the leaderboard.
Camilo Villegas and the overnight joint leader Cameron Tringale were the other two to share the eighth position with DeLaet.
Ken Duke, the other joint overnight leader, carded a four under par to share the second spot with a one-stroke deficit to Dufner. He managed to score a total of five birdies against a lone bogey.
Meanwhile, the world number two Luke Donald jumped by eighty spots to share the 22nd spot on the leaderboard.
He started the round on the back nine of the course with a birdie on the par-four 10th hole. Birdies on the 14th and 18th took him three-under through the nine holes.
His front-nine performance was even better, as he made an eagle-birdie-birdie streak on the first three holes that he played.
“I went on a nice little run with birdieing 18, holed a 7-iron from 150 on the 1st, chipped in on the 2nd from the front of the green and made the nice, nice 2 on 3,” Donald said.
“Obviously yesterday it was a little bit untidy with the few irons shots,” he added. “I hit 3 balls in the water yesterday”.
“Aside from the ball striking, it wasn't that different other than that little run, you know, a lot more encouraging. I felt like I've been very close the last few weeks. Nice to finally post a low number”.
Overall, it was a great comeback by Donald, especially after the disappointing first-round performance that cost him a one-over par 73. He is now standing six-strokes behind the leader at six-under par two-round score.
