The Islanders had a toilsome four months of cricket and the coach fears the weariness might start to show on the players with some major assignments ahead.
The Lankan season started off with a home series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 in April, which was followed by the Indian Premier League, where most of the leading players participated throughout May.
In June, the Islanders hosted http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, featuring five ODIs and a lone T20I.
With an unchanged squad during the season, most of the players have been playing in all formats of the game. The hosts will go against a strong Indian team, seeking to turn the deficit.
“We find ourselves in a situation very different from the Indian team,” said http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Xavier-Ford-c60657, the coach.
“India have had a break, they are really just getting themselves back in. On the other hand, some of our players have had a very, very busy time and fatigue management has become quite high priority. We have to handle players slightly differently. Keeping
them nice and fresh is very important.”
The Islanders will be launching their inaugural Sri Lankan Premier League (SLPL) from Aug 11, and later, they will be hosting the T20 World Cup starting from Set 18.
Ford, who was appointed as the Lankan Coach in January this year, believes that in order to avoid burning out of his players, it will be important to carefully manage their workload.
“We are in discussions to try to put something in place,” the South African coach said.
“It’s an advantage to have them playing the SLPL and T20 but at the same time, we do need to make sure that they come out of very fresh,” the 51-year-old further added.
