Graham Gooch backs under-fire Jonny Bairstow – Cricket News Update
The batting coach of England, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Alan-Gooch-c60530 is not worried about Jonny Bairstow’s seemingly short-ball weakness and is hopeful the Yorkshireman will emerge as a “successful Test player” in the long run.
"I don't think you should make judgements on just a short passage of play,” said Graham Gooch while speaking to the media reporters on the eve of the washed out Day one of Edgbaston Test against West Indies.
"He (Bairstow) has to cope with the pressure of playing at the highest level and I think he's got a good attitude, he's an excellent player and, as far as I'm concerned, he will be a successful Test player,” England’s batting coach hoped.
Jonny Bairstow, the 22-year-old Yorkshire-born top-order batsman of England, debuted in Test  cricket last month with a Test match against West Indies at the home of cricket, The Lord’s. The rookie batsman failed to deliver his best in both of the Test matches
played so far scoring just 20 runs in three innings.
In the second Test at Trent Bridge, Bairstow was pelted with short balls by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KAJ-Roach-c1758, before dismissing him on 4. The young batsman was quickly criticised for his short-ball weakness.
The 58-year-old great, who played 118 Tests and 125 one Day Internationals for England, admitted that Bairstow had struggled against aggressive fast bowling in the last two Tests, however, he was confident the young top-order batsman will overcome his problems
with the short ball and will soon bounce back strongly.
"I think he had discomfort (at Trent Bridge) with a few balls against a good fast bowler. When you first come in, every batsman is vulnerable,” said Gooch insisting, "don't judge a player on just a few good balls."
The legendary http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 batsman, who played his best Test innings against a formidable West Indian pace attack of 1980 and 1990s, further added that Bairstow is not one exceptional case struggling at the start of his career.
"If you're saying 'do I think there's a problem?', then the answer is no," the veteran concluded.
