Former England captain Graham Gooch has said that the current English team has the capability of changing history and win the ongoing ICC World Cup 2011.
The most prestigious honour of international cricket, the Cricket World Cup is one trophy that eludes
England.
Gooch, who is also the batting consultant of the English team, feels that the current squad under the leadership of Andrew Strauss has the potential to bring laurels for the country.
England reached the final of the mega event in 1979, 1987 and 1992 but ended up at the wrong side of the result on all three times. Gooch is the only unfortunate player who appeared in those three finals.
The legendary batsman said, “We know we can improve. We know we have better cricket within our team. Winning the World Cup didn't happen for me, and I hope that this team have got it within them to win the World Cup - I'm
convinced they have.”
England have had a mixed tournament so far as they got beaten by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 and West Indies.
Strauss and company then had to beat http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 in their final group match at Chennai to progress to the next stage of the tournament and they did so easily. In their quarterfinal clash, the Poms will meet
Sri Lanka on Saturday in Colombo.
Gooch feels that now that his team has qualified for the knockout stage of the tournament, they have equal chance of winning the World Cup as any other team.
“They have come through this first stage of the competition, they have shown their fighting qualities, they have shown their resilience. I think we can get better, if we do, we have got as good a chance as anyone else,” former captain added.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 are never easy to beat in their own backyard but Gooch is hopeful that his team can surprise any team in the world now as the confidence level is immense at the moment.
