Graham Henry to join Argentina – Rugby News Update
Graham Henry, the 66-year-old former coach of New Zealand has taken up the position of technical advisor with Argentina, promising to make an impact at the Rugby Championship for the supremacy of the Southern Hemisphere.
Henry is no novice at coaching, having started with the Auckland Grammar School, and in 1992 was appointed the head coach of Auckland. He is excited at having a new challenge, after successfully leading the All Blacks to a World Cup triumph in 2011.
He said, “Rugby is in my blood. Coaching is like a disease. I like coaching and I like the game. Argentina is a challenge and I enjoy a challenge. I also respect the people here. They are good people, good rugby people, so this is also a privilege for me."
He will not be directly involved with coaching the Pumas but rather exchange ideas with other coaches, and help them improve their game. The first thing that they want to focus on before Argentina kick off their Rugby Championship campaign against South
Africa at the Estadio Malvinas, is to score more tries. It is a tough ask, as they are pitted against Australia, New Zealand, and the Springboks at the tournament, all great teams in their own rights.
Speaking about the tournament he said, "I think we should look at this tournament as a great opportunity rather than something we are concerned about. If we are inhibited by the Championship, we will not play well. If we are excited, we will do our best."
However, he has only signed a short-term contract with the Pumas, and so far he has been impressed with the information that he has been provided with. Graham Henry who was knighted recently for his contribution to the sport also added that Argentina can
only improve if they play strong teams, and having performed well at the last two World Cups, they are in a good position to improve.
Henry has been named the International Rugby Board Coach of the Year four times, and having the experience of coaching many teams, he is perfect person to help the Pumas become a better team.
