Graham Onions called up as fast bowling cover for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 series - Cricket News Update
England has called up http://www.senore.com/Cricket/United-Arab-Emirates-c3033 (UAE) where they will play a complete series against Pakistan from January 17, 2012.
England's national selector, Geoff Miller, confirmed Graham Onions' call in to the squad as the fast bowling back-up for UAE tour.
"We've obviously got some niggles from the seamer point of view, so http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Geoffrey-Miller-c58870 while talking to the media reporters on Sunday. "If he's not required then he'll probably
come back after the first Test, or even during it," he added further.
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Durham-c782 pacer has not been officially included in the 16-member Test squad announced on last Friday. However keeping in view that three of the front-line pace bowlers - Stuart Broad, Chris Tremlett and Tim Bresnan – have recently
recovered from respective injuries, ECB selectors decided to send Onions to UAE with the team to ensure a pace bowling back-up is available to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Flower-c44362 to cope with any unwanted situation.
The spearhead of England pace attack, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SCJ-Broad-c2465 has recently recovered from the shoulder injury he had sustained during the home series against India, while Chris Tremlett is coming back in the squad after recovering from a back
injury which he had sustained in July earlier this.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TT-Bresnan-c2711, on the other hand, has recently undergone an elbow surgery to remove a bone fragment and could be a doubtful starter for the first Test, starting in Dubai on January 17 next year.
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 team management is hopeful that the trio will be completely fit ahead of the Dubai Test.
Onions, the 29-year-old Durham pace bowler, has not played for the national side since January 2010. His last international appearance for England was against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 at Newlands last year. After that the seamer suffered a career
threatening back injury which kept him out of action for almost one year.
He came back to the national squad this summer when he was called in to the squad as back up for James Anderson for the final Test against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, at The Oval. However, he could not make England’s playing XI for the game. Later he
toured http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 and India with the ODI squads but failed to get the call into the playing XI during both the tours.
He has so far played 8 Tests and has 28 wickets in his name at an average of 31.03 and an economy rate of 3.64.
