We went to a restaurant yesterday and they added the gratuity to the bill, and it was way more then the 10% of the bill, my question is should tipping be added to the bill or should that be optional as to how much you want to tip depending on the service

  1. a lot of times its added to the bill because a lot of people don't know how to tip. a proper tip for good service should be anywhere from 15 to 20%...18% if its average....people don't know that servers only make 2.13 an hour, not minimum wage. so should it be added? no, i guess it shoudn't because the tip should reflect what you think of the service, but stupid people who leave 2 or 3 dollars off of a 60 dollar tab ruin it for everyone else......and i speak from experience cause i was a server

  2. I personally feel the gratuity should be equal to the service and quality of the food.  Standard tipping is 15-20%, but if it's a group of six or larger they often add the gratuity.  If you question the amount added, always ask to see the manager, most certainly if food/service was not satisfactory.

  3. At "better" restaurants they always add gratituty if the party is a certain number of people (usually 6 I believe) You will see a little blip at the bottom of the menu that states as such. 10% is not considered a good tip...it is 15% - 20% for servers because they have to split all tips with others (bus boy et al). Consider this:  they are waiting on you for minimum wage....that is not even enough to buy gasoline these days....

  4. I always tip 20% regardless of the service...

  5. I think the gratuities should depend on the service you get. I even worked as a waitress "in the day" but back then we did our job, we took care of our customers always hopping, around making sure the customers are happy & have everything they need. The tips were great! If you have a big party then tips should be included, but if the service was bad, you get the manager and tell him about your experince. Most managers will do what it takes to make sure you'll come back.

I like leaving what I think the service deserves and most of the time it's more than the 15%.

Things just have changed since I was a waitress!

  6. I work as a server in Canada. Someone had a bright idea to add at the bottom of the menu :Gratuities included in menu pricing. I just laughed! It never flew. I work in a union restaurant and we get gratuities as well. Some of our servers think the gratuities are a given and they sure don't put out the service. I was shocked at what the customers still tip these servers regardless. Personally, I will leave a tip unless the service was non-existant or down right rotten. At one point I saw  the menus the chef was going to put out that said - Gratuities included in pricing. I just laughed! It didn't fly at all. We went to gratuity sharing with the kitchen all make a higher wage than the servers. It was to encourage better teamwork. Well, that 'better teamwork[' lasted a whole two days! There is confusion with the gst (goods and service tax) added to the bill. That is not our tip, and alot of the foreign customers think that it is. Anyway, I think the tip should reflect "real and genuine service!" No one should feel obligated to leave a tip for anything else but. For me, I think of the gratuity as a bonus. I guess the Goverment of Canada thinks its part of their bonus too.

  7. 10% is not a good tip. 15-20% is. On large parties I believe tip should be included and if you liked the server, you should tip a few bucks extra on top of the gratuity. People don't understand servers make 2 dollars an hour, tips are their paychecks. The bill is for food, the tip is for service. Good service=good tip. Or at least thats how it should be.

  8. If it's more than 8 people, most restaurants will add an 18% gratuity automatically.  It's really up to you, if you think that the server did an outstanding job, you can add a little more.

Question though, do you not leave more than a 10 percent tip? I would really hate to be your server if that's the case.

  9. Most restaurants do not add gratuity to your bill. But those that do usually have it posted it somewhere in the restaurant or even in the menu. I've only seen it on a menu that read "gratuity added for parties of 6 or more people". Most people are cheap with tipping but i guess to figure it out is usually double the tax on your bill. I tip according to service but min to the 15%.

  10. I will always leave something. once we left a penny because we heard it showed what you thought of the service and did not just forget a tip. I have also left notes, that the food was terrible but the service was great, and not to share the tip with the kitchen. at a bare min. double the tax that will get you to the bottom of acceptable levels
