Hi, I have a silly grammar question:

Is it correct grammar to say:

"I guess you and I are friends"

or

"I guess me and you are friends"

Thank you!

  1. you and i. its ok i always get that mixed up too!

  2. to understand which one to use do the following

remove the 'you' from the sentence and try it using 'i' and 'me'

in your example it would become either

    i am your friend

    or

    me am your friend

so clearly 'i' is correct one here

    another example

    'He'll blame you and me'

    or

    He'll blame you and I

remove the 'you' and your two choices are

    'he'll blame i'

    or

    'he'll blame me'

    'he'll blame me' is correct

so the correct sentence is he'll blame you and me

and it's deemed correct usage to put yourself last - so it's never 'me and you', but either 'you and i' or you and me'

  3. You and I.

It's because of the way you're using the nouns...they're the subject of the sentence, usually used at the start of the sentence, whereas me is an object, typically towards the end of the sentence.
