  1. A transitive verb has an object, so look at the sentences to see if there is an object of the verb's action.  An intransitive verb is an action verb, but the action is not transferred to anything, but it is usually modified by a preposition phrase or an adverb.

    8.  "Founded" has an object (settlement), so it is transitive.

    9.  "Traveled" has no object, but is modified by a prepositional phrase (to American shores), so it is intransitive.

    10. desired = transitive because object =opportunity

11.worked =intransitive because prep. phrase modifier = in America

    12.  remained = intransitive (ditto above)

    13.  indentured = transitive because object = themselves

    14.  came = intransitive, no object

    15.  brought = transitive, object = dreams

    16.  arrived = intransitive, no object, but prep phrase modifier = with hope

    17. learned = transitive, object = great deal

    18.  celebrated = transitive, object Thanksgiving Day

    19.  held = transitive, object celebration

    20. shared = intransitive because no object, but prep phrase modifier - in the celebration

Do those explanations help you see the differences in the two types of verbs?

  2. "The transitive verb expresses action that begins in the subject (agent) and 'goes across' (trans+ire) to the object (receiver). The object may not be the same as the subject, for example: He cut himself. But it need not be the same, for example: He cut the cake....A transitive verb always requires a complement, that is, a word which completes the meaning of the predicate."

"The intransitive verb expresses action that begins and ends in the agent, the subject; consequently, the subject must be both agent and patient, for example: The bird flies."
