Gran Turismo 5 player wins a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, GT5 Signature Edition competition ends
The Gran Turismo series has always been known for one thing and one thing only: cars. The latest installment in the franchise, Gran Turismo 5 has taken the series’ association with cars one step further, by actually rewarding players with real life supercars.
Marco Calvo is a name no one may be familiar with, but with the car he just won himself, he will be the talk of his hometown in Spain. That is because Calvo has won himself a brand new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG after winning the Gran Turismo 5 sponsored competition.
If readers wish to catch up on what the competition was all about up to this point, they can click here to read Bettor.com’s earlier article which explains, in detail, everything anyone would need to know about the competition up till the final.
For those who want a bite-sized summary of the preceding events, we have you covered there as well. The competition was organised by Sony and Polyphony Digital, in conjunction with Mercedes-Benz, in which players who had ordered themselves a copy of Gran
Turismo 5’s Signature Edition were automatically put into a lucky draw. Those who were selected were whisked off to the prestigious AMG Academy where they were taught how to drive really, really fast in really, really fast cars.
In the end there was a competition, spread over two days, where the final 15 contestants would battle it out over a number of challenges to decide who would get to be the new example for teenagers everywhere to contradict their parents every time the elders
said, ‘Video games never did any good for anyone.’
To which, the child can now so easily reply, ‘Marco Calvo won a SLS AMG because he played Gran Turismo 5!’ Parents beware, you have been warned.
On the other hand, the contestants did receive professional training to compliment their Gran Turismo 5 skills over the course of the competition. While there is only one winner, it would be harsh to term any of the contestants as losers, seeing how each
of them got to drive a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG around both the AMG Academy track, as well as in the Red Bull Ring all the way in Austria.
Formula One driver, David Coulthard was there in person to design the course which players had to navigate around and met the contestants as well.
After the two events, Calvo emerged the winner and the 24-year-old, who is a student by profession, drove home in the car no one would mind having in their garage, all of that because of a video game named Gran Turismo 5.
