Question:

Grand Canyon caused by the "great flood"?

I just read a comment to an article about people at the Grand Canyon being forced to put pamphlets saying that the GC was caused by thte "great flood" described in the bible.

One commenter said,

Did you know that they forced the folks at the grand canyon to put literature in the racks out there dscribing how the canyon was the result of the 'great flood' of Noah?

The response was this,

As for the Grand Canyon, perhaps, because we get indoctrinated our whole life with evolution, you don't realize that there have been proofs, for example, like at Mount St. Helen, where the layers made were made in a matter of hours. The same layers secular geologists say took millions of years in the Grand Canyon. Also, isn't it true that geologists teach that the world was once covered by water? Why then, would the story of Noah be so unbelievable?

If the great flood and the water just went away, wouldn't our oceans be drying up as well? And doesn't climate have an effect on these layers?

  1. Nobody forced you to believe in evolution nor is science indoctrinating population in believing it… Besides, major Christian denominations, such as Catholic Church don’t have problem with evolution; this is only issue for misguided, fanatical, Northern American, evangelonazi organizations that bother with such websites like answer http://www.answersingenesis.org/ or Museum of creationism.

Great Canyon was created over very long period of time, when Colorado Plateau continued to be uplifted while rivers on in it continued to flow through it, and slowly like saw cut into its surface.  There are other canyons in SW USA, and they were created the same way:  large land being uplifted by subduction of Farallon  Plate under North American Plate, and water on the surface slowly cut path in it.  Flooding would not have such force to cut that deep into earth crust, there is not geological model that would confirm extensive flooding over short period of time just couple thousands years ago.  We could even measure the speed of the uplift of the Colorado Plateau and it is still happening as of today!

If the flood would cut into the land, where did the deposit suddenly go?  The volume of such magnitude is far larger than anything could be produced by Mt. Helen…. Gulf of California would have certainly sudden large deposits of minerals and sediment from such event.  Last time the Earth was completely covered with water, you have to go back hundreds of million years back well into Pre-Cambrian era.  There is no any evidence of massive worldwide flooding in recent geological era.

  2. The grand canyon did not caused the great flood of NOAH.it is true that teachers told that the world was once covered by water nearby Iraq (cudi) of Noah.

  3. I always thought it was caused by a meteor or a mega earthquake caused by a meteor of great size. The Great Flood" my @55.

  4. Different sediments have different physical characteristics.  The debris flows associated with Mt St Helens or any other debris flow produces a characteristic sediment that does not compare in any way with the vast majority of the sedimentary rocks exposed in the grand canyon, never mind the presence of cross-cutting and disconformable features that cannot be explained by formation during a short time frame.

I am just curious if the delugionists would have the sediments formed rapidly, and THEN the canyon cut as the waters drained away?  There are so many problems with the physical aspects of that concept that it would take pages to describe them all.

  6. the grand canyon was NOT caused by some flood.  it is a result of erosion over millions of years by the colorado river.  and it is still going on today.  a quick flood wouldn't be able to create something as massive as the grand canyon.  the earth changes slowly as a result of natural processes.

  7. The grand canyon was created by the slow erosion the Colorado river had on the rocks around it over billions of years.

  9. That's not true, by the way, about them being forced to put out pamphlets describing how the canyon was caused by the great flood.

What *is* true is that the bookstore there does offer for sale one book which presents that theory as truth -- along with dozens of other books that present a more scientific, realistic explanation.

The official guidelines for National Park Service employees and programs state that they "must refrain from appearing to endorse religious beliefs explaining natural processes."
