Question:

Grand National - Good or Bad?

I am intrested to know how many people support or disagree with the grand national.

I have a horse of my own, and think the grand national is great. It is a big test in all aspects of the horse, and I think that the people who say the horses don't enjoy it are totally wrong. When a rider falls off the horse carries on racing, having fun!

Please state your opinions on it.. Thanks

  1. good i won my money back and more

  2. The amount of horses injured in the Grand National is disgraceful, and I hate the way this worst of races is punted by the media as a "big family fun day", encouraging everyone to gamble.

    So, my answer is, "Bad".

  3. hey i don't really know much about horses, but i was wondering if you could help me with my other latin translation.  i'm starting to study for the final now so i don't have to cram the day before, but no one but you has been willing to help me out a little.  thank you so much for your help.

  4. I think it's regrettable that so many horses have to die at a single event.  I love horse racing and I love jumping (hunters, not so much jumpers), but I really don't understand steeplechasing or jumps racing as you Europeans would call it.  I watched the Cheltenham race and I found the jumps to be just insane.  They're too tall and they're not the collapse-able kind that you see in other jumps racing.  They're sturdy.  If a horse hits one, it's going to hurt.  And if it catches a leg on it, it looks like it would be quite dangerous.  At least stadium jumping is built with jumps that will break away quickly in case of an accident.

I marvel at the fact that some Europeans criticize the Americans for allowing horses to run on Lasix.  But then they defend these events where numerous horses are injured and there's always some fatalities.

I agree that horses love running and the jumpers love jumping or else they wouldn't do it.  But I don't think that the jumps horses really understand that it's dangerous.  Sure they love running and when they drop their jockey, they'll keep going, but I've seen horses get tied up in jumps before and they're certainly not happy animals... they're terrified.  And usually for good reason because if the horse is that immobilized, there's a good chance that it's not leaving the track alive.

  5. As an American, I don't know enough about the Grand National to assert an opinion about it.  (Well, I could be one of those people who goes spouting their opinion as if it's law, but I like to have my opinions based on facts.)

I do think it's interesting that there are 2 opinions against the Grand National in response to this question and they have significant anonymous opposition (thumbs down) but no one has put forth an opinion in favor of the Grand National.  I'm actually interested in the debate and I hope someone steps up to give a good opinion in favor of the Grand National... something of substance... not "I make lots of money off of it."
