Grandin/ Uhlirova defeats Candela/ Lucic in the quarterfinal of the 2011 Barcelona Ladies Open
The South African/Czech pair of Natalie Grandin and Vladimira Uhlirova prevailed over Spanish/Croat pair of Estrella Cabeza Candela and Mirjana Lucic with double breadstick in the quarterfinal of the 2011 Barcelona Ladies Open
here in Barcelona, Spain. The pair moved past the Slovenian/Ukrainian pair of Andreja Klepac and Olga Savchuk in the first round of the tournament to make it this far.
Grandin and Uhlirova took off to a flying start as they thrashed Candela and Lucic in the opening set, breaking their opponents in the fourth and sixth game to win the set 6-1.Both pairs held their serves easily and broke their
opponents easily to enter the semi final of the tournament. Grandin and Uhlirova hit 80 percent of the first serves, winning 83 percent of points on their first serves and 67 percent of points on their second serves. The winning pair did not face any breakpoint
opportunity however they managed to break their opponents twice to clinch the set with a 6-1 score line.
After losing the first set, Candela and Lucic managed to save three of five break points in the second set. They fired in 63 percent of the first serves and captured 60 percent of points on their first serves and 17 percent of
the points on their second serves respectively. The South African/Czech pair on the other hand was very active throughout the match as they managed to clinch a whopping 91 percent behind their meager 55 percent first serves. Candela and Lucic looked very exhausted
and finally handed over the match to their opponents with a loss of twelve games.
Undoubtedly, it was an action-packed performance from the South African/Czech pair who presented brilliant tennis skills for the Spanish crowd at the David Lloyd Club Turo in Barcelona, Spain. The winning pair will face either
second seeded Italian pair of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci or the Uzbek/Taiwanese pair of Akgul Amanmuradova and Hsieh Su-Wei in the semifinal of the tournament.
