  1. Granite has become so popular major hardware stores are starting to carry inexpensive options like pre-cut specific length counter tops.  Check with Homedepot or Lowes (or even better if you have a locally owned large hardware store check there).

You might also check the yellow pages for stone shops in your area, if they don't make counter tops, they can probably tell you where to look for the best deals.

  2. I would recommend researching local fabricators to try to get the lowest price.  Compare quotes & ask if they can beat your other prices.  It can be tough to fins someone who is ordering the pre-cut 8' lengths with edge treatments.  I know one fabricator in my area who was importing the pre-cut pieces from China, but it wasn't working out for him b/c of islands, etc and if he got the not-standard sizes locally, then the colors didn't match.  It wasn't worth it for him.  As for buying remnants or waste, the difficulty is finding pieces that fit your msmts for a kitchen & then finding multiple pieces that match.  Remnants are more commonly used for vanities.  And just to offer another explanation than the poster's above - clients are most often quoted price per square foot, or price per job.  They may need to use 2 slabs to complete that job, but the client is only paying for what they use.  They still have waste if they only used a portion of the full slab, but it usu was not paid for by the client.  They use that waste for remnant jobs if possible.  I just to want to think there is anything "unethical" about the general practices of the industry.  Of course, there may be exceptions.  Good luck!

  3. I would research installers directly. Sometimes, they have excess from jobs and homeowners do not ask for the "waste". They then build up their own stock of these overages, and do "side work". Not really ethical in the sense of the word, however, it happens all the time with all types of floor coverings as well!
