  2. 1. make sure cabinets ar leveled

    2. use 1/2 plywood

    3. apply 6mil plastic as a moisture barrier

    4.use 1/2 cement board

    5, use a non-modified thin set mortar

    hope it helps...good luck

  3. #/4 ply and 1/2 inch cement board or 2-   i/2 inch pcs "crossed"  grain going diff ways for strength and cement board thin setted down  and nail or  screwed  securely down..  Tile Council recommend minimum of 1 and 1/4 inch total substrate.. but on a counter top go as strong as poss because of the cabinet top gaps..  GL

  4. If you are tiling a countertop with granite tiles, it is a good idea to first put down heavy 4 or 6 mil plastic as a vapor barrier over at least a 1" plywood underlayment.  You can then either s***w down 1/4" cement board or for an even thinner application, s***w downsheets of masons metal lath.  Once either of these is down, trowel on thinset mortar and set the tile.
