Granollers/Lopez crush Mayer/Melzer to enter semis – Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2012
Spanish duo, Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez, devastated the German-Austrian team, Florian Mayer and Jurgen Melzer, with a bagel at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2012 on Friday. They jolted down a 6-0, 6-1 success against their opponents to cruise into
the final four at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Masters 1000 event taking place in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
The ultra-fit Spaniards showed their best tennis to outrun Mayer and Melzer in 47 minutes. Both teams were facing each other for the first time and after earning this glory, Granollers and Lopez booked a place in the final four at this clay court event.
Ranked 16th in the ATP World Tour Doubles Rankings, Granollers and Lopez thundered into the Monte Carlo Country Club. They blocked the lone breakpoint they faced and cashed in all three break chances to go on a six-game killing spree, ultimately
pocketing a bagel.
The Spanish junction maintained their intensity in the following set and held their serve in the opening game with poise. After the German-Austrian pair slid their serve in the second game, Granollers and Lopez unleashed their skills again, eventually pulling
out the set with a breadstick. They brushed off all three breakpoints they encountered and converted two out of three break chances to their advantage.
Overall, the Spaniards formulated a much lower first serve share of 66 per cent as opposed to their rival’s 80 per cent but tremendously clicked 20 out of 27 points on it.
Next challenge for Granollers and Lopez is the top seeded American collaboration of Bob and Mike Bryan. The defending champions slaughtered fifth seeded Leander Paes-Radek Stepanek junction with a bagel to set-up this duel. They swiped in their entire serves
convincingly and cashed in half of the 10 break opportunities to seal the deal with a 6-2, 6-0 success.
The second seeds, Belarus’ Max Mirnyi and Canada’s Daniel Nestor, will accompany the Spaniards in the final four. They dominated throughout the match against their unseeded opponents, Viktor Troicki and Stanislas Wawrinka, and eventually carved out the victory
with a 6-4, 7-5 score line in 68 minutes.
