Granollers/Lopez crush Schoorel/Sijsling in the quarterfinal – World Tennis Tournament 2012
Spaniards Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez breezed past the Dutch duo of Thomas Schoorel and Igor Sijsling in straight sets at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, the Netherlands on Friday. Granollers and Lopez were
almost flawless, as they allowed their opponents to win just two games before sealing the quarterfinal, 6-1, 6-1, in just 47 minutes.
The Spanish duo dominated the match right from the beginning, snatching their opponents’ serve in the second game and holding their own in the third to claim a 3-0 lead. Another break in the sixth allowed Granollers and Lopez to
serve out the first set at 5-1.
The first serve proved to be the main weapon for Granollers and Lopez in the opener. The Spanish combination managed to capture an incredible 92 percent of the first delivery points. Granollers and Lopez kept attacking Schoorel
and Sijsling’s second serves, sealing five of the six of them in the first set.
The Spanish team was in splendid form. Granollers and Lopez showed no respite to their opponents and kept on winning games one after another. They broke Schoorel and Sijsling three times in the second set, bagging it 6-1.
In a similar fashion to the opener, Granollers and Lopez won most of the return points. The Spanish duo saved the one break point they came across and capitalised on three of the eight opportunities of their own in the second set.
It looks like Lopez, who is Spain’s top doubles player, has found a permanent partner in the shape of Granollers. They teamed up for Spain’s Davis Cup tie against Kazakhstan, thrashing Evgeny Korolev and Yuriy Schukin in straight
sets 6-2 6-3 6-1.
Ranked 40th in doubles, Lopez combined with three different players in his previous tournaments this year and could not go past the quarterfinal at any occasion. Partnering his compatriot David Marrero, Lopez was beaten
by French-Serbian team of Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic in straight sets 3-6, 2-6 in the round of 32.
Granollers and Lopez are drawn to take on the duo of Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau or the combination of Juan Martin Del Potro and Philipp Petzschner in the semi-finals.
