Granollers/Lopez trounce Berdych/Mayer to reach quarter-finals – Rogers Cup 2012
Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez of Spain scored a one sided victory over the Czech-German duo of Tomas Berdych and Florian Mayer in the second round of Rogers Cup on Thursday.
The eighth seeds allowed Berdych and Mayer to win just four games in the entire match, capturing it in straights sets 6-2, 6-2 in just 57 minutes.
Granollers/Lopez and Berdych/Mayer won their opening serves to equalise the score at 1-1. The Spanish tandem struck in the third and fifth game, consolidating on the double break to race to a 5-1 lead. Berdych and Mayer managed
to hold their serve in the seventh to reduce the deficit to 2-5 but that was all for them, as Granollers and Lopez closed it 6-2.
The Spaniards fired a couple of aces and made one double fault in the first set. The right-handers maintained a first serve percentage of just 56 and bagged 10 of the 14 points on them. Granollers and Lopez sent aggressive replies
to their opponents’ second serves, winning five of the seven points on them. The Spanish pair managed to evade all the five break threats they faced and utilised two of the four opportunities they created.
Start of second set was just like the first, as both teams held their serve in the opening two games to take the score to 1-1. Granollers and Lopez nailed a break in the third and consolidated on it to build a 3-1 advantage. The
Spanish combination allowed Berdych and Mayer to claim only one point in the following two games, sealing the second set 6-2.
Granollers and Lopez banged in two aces and committed a single double fault, keeping their first serve percentage at 74. The Spaniards were almost flawless on their second deliveries, as they dropped only one point on them, winning
13 of the 14. Granollers and Lopez did not provide any break chance to the Czech-German pair and converted both of their own in the second set.
Ranked sixth in the world, Granollers and Lopez improved to a 31-15 win/loss record in this season. The Spanish tandem has already two grabbed two titles in this year so far. However, they gave a disappointing performance at the
London Olympics, losing to the unseeded Israeli team of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram in the first round.
Granollers and Lopez will lock horns with the top seeds, Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor, in the quarter-finals.
