Grant Flower calls it a day
Former Zimbabwean batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Grant-c60671 Flower has retired from all forms of cricket to start focusing on the national team coaching job. Flower made a come back to the national team after six years, playing two ODIs against South Africa in October last year.
Playing against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 he scored 13 and 22 in both his innings. He said that, “I have drawn the line.” Flower featured in the Zimbabwe team which played it’s first ever Test match in international cricket in 1992.
He was also a part of the team when they defeated http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 by an innings in 1995. Flower played a crucial role in the outcome of that match, as he scored his career best 201 in the match and remained unbeaten. He also played county cricket in England for
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783. The majority of his matches were ODIs, and he is looking forward to coaching the national side.
Commenting on his coaching role he said, “I had to make the decision whether to coach properly or continue playing properly and prepare as well as I could. I think there’s enough talent coming through and I don’t want to hold anyone back. I’ve had a good
run and I’ve enjoyed it, but there is a transition from player to coach, and I think it’s time to take it.”
The star Zimbabwean batsman represented his country for 67 Tests and 221 ODIs. He became the first batsman in the history of Zimbabwean cricket to score a century in both the innings of a Test match. He achieved this feat against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 in 1997.
His brother Andy Flower also represented the national team. Andy, the elder of the two was one of the finest batsmen produced by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045. He had an average of over fifty runs in Test cricket.
Andy retired from cricket in 2006 and took up coaching. He is currently coaching the English team and has led the team to many historical victories. The English team has won the Twenty20 World Cup and the Ashes in 2009 under his coaching. The team also retained
the Ashes in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 for the first time in 24 years under the coaching of Andy Flower.
